At the beginning of the summer period, Emmanuel and family set off on a trip to Uganda. Part of the family’s plan was to carry out voluntary work at the Kiwumulo house of ALLEVIATE child Initiative. During the three week period, together with the team on the ground, the family organized a range of activities and workshops as in the report below.

Dental and Medical Clinics
In collaboration with the RUN foundation, they had a dental hygiene awareness workshop and dental checks. Up to 80 people turned up to attend the clinic. A number of teeth extractions were carried out too. The RUN foundation spreads the gospel in this form, taking the practical ‘Jesus Cares’ message directly to communities in need. A great charity to partner with since we hold similar evangelistic methods.
Our medical team together with a volunteer doctor did cater for the other medical needs of the attendees as showed in photos.

Sensory Play Workshops
Two separate classes were conducted aimed at encouraging and sensitising parents on importance of engaging their children in play and in brain stimulating activities. Children were split into groups based on age and as a result two separate training sessions were conducted on separate days. Both classes had a total of 30 parents, children in attendance.

More to Do

Despite the positive turn up and participation, some parents complained for having them engage in childlike play like painting and creation of musical shakers. Once the aims were explained and saw some of their children’s creation and reaction to having their paintings pinned on the walls, they seemed to appreciate the idea Afterall. This is a definite indicator of the need and we will continue to encourage parents to interact on every level with their disabled child.
Some were heard saying they would like more of these workshops to help and encourage their participation with their child. The activities main goals were to show the children that they matter and that the Centre is their space.
