Volunteer stories

”I am an Occupational Therapist, with some experience of working with children with extra needs. Presently, I work for Discharge Assess, supporting adults to return home from hospital.

I was asked by a friend’s husband if I would be interested in volunteering in Uganda. I felt privileged to have been asked to join this adventure. I must admit, I questioned if I had the skills and knowledge to share with families. I had to trust that God had put us there for a reason. Before I left, I felt God saying to me – if you make a difference for just one- that is enough!

As a team we got to know each other really well. When one shared a piece of knowledge it opened the door (memories) to share more. The combination of us from the UK and our new Ugandan friends, made an inspirational team. I have learned so much from this experience… a thoroughly enriching experience.” – Ruth

”I’m an Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. I got involved with this amazing charity through Viv Duncan, a midwife who I have worked with for many years.
At first, I was anxious that I may not have the skills needed to work with disbanded children and their families. I quickly found this was not the case.

At the Centre, I was carrying out medical checks, provided medical advice and support for those who needed it and trained the team in ‘basic life support.’ Watching the team develop over the weeks was such a rewarding experience.

Something particularly significant which happened was that I spoke to God for the first time. Never been brought up in a religious household or baptised. I had only really attended church at Christmas, although I did feel I had some level of faith. During my two weeks, I spent time talking to my colleagues about their faith. I also discussed their relationship with God. I witnessed first hand the power that faith has. This experience inspired me to lead my first prayer with the team.

Going forward, I hope that my relationship with both God and this amazing charity will continue to grow and develop.”- Amy
